21 Stages of “Crazy Love”

Crazy Love The Process by Susan Pepler
  1. Go shopping for groceries at the Atwater Market
  2. Fall in love with colourful peonies along the way
  3. Buy them and bring them home
  4. Try them out in every vase or container
  5. Pick the antique Royal Limoges vase … it’s the most beautiful and it’s all about love. We love LOVE.
  6. Smile a big smile … enjoy the bouquet and imagine the spectacular painting that’s about to happen
  7. Place the bouquet on a table near the window. Turn it around, find the best angle & the most flattering light
  8. Choose the ideal canvas size to honour this glorious sight. In this case lusciously large!
  9. Decide on the composition, mark it on the canvas
  10. Put Bryan Ferry’s “As Time Goes By” album on the Bose player. Play it so loud that I can’t hear myself think.
  11. Colour the canvas with light washes of paint and … and let the games begin!!!
  12. Paint the background!
  13. Paint the greens!
  14. Paint the flowers & sing!
  15. Paint the vase!
  16. STOP. Look. Don’t judge. Call it … “Crazy Love”.
  17. Put it away. Don’t look at it. Start another painting. Go to the gym. Walk the dog …
  18. Bring it back much later. Ask itwhat do you want? What do you need?
  19. Look and listen. It tells me. I follow through, tweaking and fine tuning … until the magic happens.
  20. I sign it. I varnish it … and I share it with you. E N J O Y !

  1. Hi Susan,
love the painting – the colours, the paint texture, the composition,
    – and above all the description of the process.
none of it possible without such a love and enjoyment of life.

  2. This is great! We can feel the joy in your process, and the whimsy of your muse. I love the transparency and authenticity of your approach, Susan. Paint long and prosper. (Star Trek reference)

  3. Marvelous! I enjoyed reading every step of the process. Your creative process is a mere reflection of what’s on canvas. It’s something that can only come alive through pure talent.
    Congratulations!

  4. Hi Susan, I love your blog. It is so nice and clean, so luciously coloured, and interesting!!! I look forward to more!
